150 years since the birth of architect Wivi Lönn

Olivia Mathilda Lönn, better known as Wivi Lönn was born in 20 May 1872. She is regarded as Finland’s most important female architect. Lönn was the first woman architect in Finland to run her own architectural firm and the first woman to be awarded the honorary title of “Professor” by the Finnish Association of Architects.

The Museum of Finnish Architecture celebrates the birth of Wivi Lönn and Architecta, the Finnish Association of Women Architects with exhibition Long Live Wivi Lönn! from 29 April 2022 to 08 January 2023.

Wivi Lönn has designed many remarkable Art Nouveau buildings, such as Tampere Central Fire Station in Tampere and The New Student House in Helsinki.

One of her designs is Ebeneser House. It is one of the first kindergartens that was free for the working class in the Nordic countries. Lönn wanted to create a pleasant house for the children. House was designed in 1906 and completed in 1908. Today the building houses the foundation Ebeneser-säätiö, Kindergarten Museum, Central Helsinki Music Institute and Daycare Ebeneser.
